The newly appointed Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, Charles Odii, has disclosed plans to set up an advisory council for small businesses in the country.

Oddi gave the directive while addressing the management staff of the commission after his assumption of duty as the 6th chief executive of the agency in Abuja on Monday.

He said the council comprising of seasoned entrepreneurs and professionals would provide advisory services on how to assist MSMEs in an accelerated manner.

Odii stated that the goals would remain unchanged but the processes may be revamped and strengthened to support the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He emphasised the key role MSMEs play as the key drivers of the economy and bedrock for employment generation.

He stressed the need to provide all the financial and non-financial support these businesses need for growth.

“I intend to set up an advisory council comprising seasoned entrepreneurs and professionals who will provide advisory services on how to assist MSMEs in an accelerated manner,” he said.

The SMEDAN DG also promised to leverage digital technologies to accelerate the rapid formalisation of Small businesses in partnership with relevant agencies.

He promised that under his watch, there would be a democratisation of access to resources required for all SMEs in Nigeria regardless of their location.

“We will build production hubs where MSMES will get access to affordable equipment to mass produce, showcase their products to the world and master storytelling exhibitions to ensure they export value,” he said.

The PUNCH reports that Odii was appointed last Friday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
