The Society of Women Accountants in Nigeria, a part of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, has said it important for professional to plan for retirement.

The association gave this advice at SWAN day-out-with-a-VIP event in Lagos.

The body also stated the importance of proper planning for a successful retirement, and noted the need for perseverance in achieving a successful career.

A former Permanent Secretary, Audit, Lagos State, Adebimpe Dada, speaking on the topic, ‘Life after retirement’, explained the importance of planning to enjoy retirement.

She said, “As a professional, there is a need to plan. Failure to do that brings consequences. Planning for retirement starts immediately when you are employed, and those years of active service remain the best time to plan. The environment helps you look inward on what the future holds.”

She encouraged the professional to do more networking and collaboration, which would reflect later in the future.

“If you do not start now to network with people, you will not have a good networking system and people you can run back to by the time it is needed,” Dada noted.

She urged female accountants to avoid debts, enrol in contributory pensions and other saving schemes, self-identification, do profitable business while in active service and make other investments.

Folake Ogunshola, who was the VIP guest of the day, narrated how she overcame several challenges to rise to the peak of her career.

She urged the female professionals to stay resilient in every challenge and put in extra effort to rise above.

According to her, there was a supernatural force behind success, which awaited anyone who had put in the struggle.
