Nigeria’s men’s 4×100 relay team are on the brink of qualifying for the 2023 World Athletics Championship, which will hold from August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary after running a season’s best of 38.26s to move into the qualification zone. The quartet — Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Alaba Akintola and Godson Brume — produced the time at the Warri Grand Prix on Thursday, defeating Ghana, who finished second.

Nigeria are now ranked joint 13th with Kenya in the top 16, one day before the qualification deadline of the World Athletics.

After striving at different meets recently, the men’s 4x400m team are the only Nigerian quartet yet to book their place in Budapest.

The women’s 4x400m quartet Omolara Omotosho, Patience Okon-George, Ella Onojuvwevwo and Imabong Uko qualified during the Lagos Athletics Club Series earlier this month after running a season’s best of 32:27:61s to move up to 14th and punch their ticket to the World Championships.
