Newly promoted Nigeria Professional Football League club Remo Stars are in talks with Gbenga Ogunbote to replace Daniel Ogunmodede as coach of the team, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
But Ogunbote, a former Sunshine Stars and Enugu Rangers’ coach, faces stiff competition for the position from Gateway coach Kazeem Busari, sources also revealed to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Ogunbote, who has been out of job since leaving Sunshine Stars in May, remains a frontrunner and according to club sources, he would be a controversial choice as manager at Remo following the departure of Ogunmodede, who guided the Sky Blues to the topflight division after three years in the Nigeria National League.
“Talks have begun with Ogunbote for him to take over from Ogunmodede ahead of the new NPFL season,” a club source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told PUNCH Sports Extra.
“He has the experience and clout to ensure the club stays up, which is the target for next season.”
It was further learnt that the former Shooting Stars coach would sign a one-year deal with Remo, with an option of another year.
“The aim is for him (Ogunbote) to stay long but there’s an offer of a year deal.”
Our correspondent also gathered that Ogunmodede is poised to join the youth team of Portuguese side Feirense.
“The main reason Ogunbote opted to discuss terms with us is that Ogunmodede will be resuming as youth coach at Feirense. He didn’t want to negotiate at all with Remo because of his relationship with the Portuguese side,” our source added.
